Help Our Own @ Physical Plant
ABOUT HELP OUR OWN @ PHYSICAL PLANT
The Physical Plant Food Drive started as a suggestion in 1992 by a groundskeeper who knew of employees who were either going consistently hungry due to financial circumstances beyond their control or experiencing temporary setbacks.
Others thought it was a good idea, and set out to raise money and request food donations within Physical Plant for Physical Plant recipients. Nominations were requested of any individual who knew of a fellow employee's need.
Each year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Physical Plant employees open their hearts and pantries to gather food and monetary donations to help provide nominated families with a nice Christmas dinner, along with some pantry staples. There have been many reasons an employee may have had extreme difficulty making ends meet. The food baskets offer a tangible way for Physical Plant to send a message of encouragement during a season wherein many people celebrate abundance by gift-giving.
In all, it takes 80 to 90 man-hours of work to prepare for the food drive including preparing the list, counting, sorting, and purchasing of food items, as well as preparation and distribution of the baskets.
