The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has authority over all operations involving byproduct material whether produced in its facilities or not. The Commission has entered into a working arrangement with the Univrsity (represented by the Radiological Safety Officer) under which it has granted a license to possess and handle certain radioactive materials. A license is subject the recognition by the University and its staff of certain rules and procedures, and delgates administrative responsibility to the University for possession, use, storage and disposal of radioactive materials. The Commission reserves to itself certain rights to revoke or cancel arrangements, to repossess or recall active materials, to inspect facilities and to review procedures. The continued existence and renewal of the license depends on the acceptance and observance of recognized procedures by all members of the staff of this University concerned in any way with the handling of radioactive material. The purpose of such procedures is to insure insofar as is humanly possible that radioactive materials are handled with the least possible hazard to the individual workers, his/her associates, the University facilities and the general public.
