Unplug computers and other electronic equipment if there is a chance of a storm

Small surge protectors are generally meant for electrical surges under 25,000 volts.

Lightning can generate a surge of as much as 50,000,000 (50 million) volts.

Surge protectors designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from a lightning strike are expensive.

The best protection is to unplug your computer and all its peripherals if there is a chance of a storm. If you plan to be away from your home when thunderstorms are possible, be sure to unplug unneeded equipment before you leave.

Turning them off but leaving them plugged in will NOT protect a computer or any other electrical appliance.  They are still in contact with your home's electrical wiring system--the perfect conduit for a monsterous electrical surge from a lightning strike.
